1D, 2D and 3D tunable composite photonic crystals for the visible-infrared spectral range

Objective

The goal of the project is to develop techniques for the fabrication of composite photonic crystals for visible-infrared range based on periodic porous matrices infiltrated with liquid crystals and vanadium dioxide and to study their structural and optical properties. The highly ordered periodic matrices of one-dimensional vertically etched silicon, two-dimensional macroporous silicon and porous alumina, three-dimensional artificial bare and inverted silicon opal crystals will be fabricated.
While applying electric field or changing temperature the dielectric constant of the filling agents can be changed thus allowing us to tune the photonic band gap (PBG) structure of composite photonic crystals.
New composite PBG materials will facilitate control of light propagation and localization in the vicinity of the PBG, modulate spontaneous emission and wave guiding effects, e.g. significantly enhance application area of photonic crystals. Among them are zero-threshold lasers, effective light emitting diodes, super-fast optical switches, wave-guides, and all-optical transistors.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
