A new generation ocean wave statistics and wave based sea-air interaction

Objective

This project is focused on the development of a new generation of the ocean wind wave statistics on a global scale and investigation of climate variability in the statistical characteristics of ocean waves. Our main goals are to develop statistical parameters of surface wind waves and wave-based sea-air interaction characteristics over the Global Ocean for the use of modellers, climate researchers and naval architects, and to quantify inter-annual and decadal scale variability in the wave statistics over the last several decades. Project objectives include computation of the most advanced at present global-scale statistical parameters of ocean wind waves from voluntary observing ship (VOS) data, wave modelling and satellite observations for the period from 1950s to 2001, their comprehensive validation and analysis of climate variability in the statistical structure of ocean waves.

Under this project new characteristics of sea-air interaction (wind stress, short-wave radiation, gas exchange) will be developed on a global scale. Project research activities include processing of the voluntary observing data, satellite measurements and results of model simulations, comparative assessments, and investigation of the mechanisms driving climate variability in the statistical structure of ocean waves. Project results will include innovative scientific outputs and data products, which will be of benefit for different international research projects, observing systems and industry. The project will be carried out by Southampton Oceanography Centre, Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Science, and Main Geophysical Observatory, which successfully co-operated during the last 5 years under the INTAS 96-2089 project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
