Hadron-electron separator for the ZEUS experiment at HERA

Objective

The electron-proton collider HERA (now operating to design specifications) extends, by several orders of magnitude, the kinematic domain studied by electron-hadron interactions. It allows the substructure of electrons and quarks to be probed to a scale of 10-18 cm and the properties of heavy quarks to be investigated.

In these studies it is important to distinguish between the electrons and hadrons produced by the interactions. For example, detecting the electron from deep inelastic scattering allows the measurement of the quark structure functions, tagging the electron from the decay of heavy quarks to electrons permits the gluon structure function to be studied, and by identifying the electro-magnetic decay of numerous particles (e.g. (0, s, Bs, J/(, etc.)) the production and properties of these particles can be studied.

To identify electrons amongst the copious number of hadrons produced, this project aims to design and assemble a 10 m2 array of 10,000 silicon diode detectors. This detector, the hadron electron separator (HES) will be integrated with the existing high resolution, uranium-scintillator calorimeter of the ZEUS experiment at HERA. The HES detector will greatly improve electron identification and thus contribute significantly to understanding of electron and quark substructure and the properties of heavy quarks.

In addition, this detector pioneers the production and operation of large area arrays of silicon diode detectors with low noise, analogue readout at a high luminosity, high rate, particle collider.
