Byzantine law and its dissemination in Armenia, Georgia and Russia

Objective

The dissemination of Byzantine law in Armenia, Georgia and Russia was part of a cultural process that took place in the Middle Ages. It had a strong effect on the shaping of modern Europe insofar as it bound Russia and, less closely, the Caucasian countries to the Orthodox world. The present programme is concerned with the medieval beginnings and the earlier stages of development of this influence. Since the dissemination of Byzantine law was a literary process, research has to deal first and foremost with texts. Given the current state of research, work will consist mainly in the preparation of editions and concordances and will concentrate on collections of canon law, thus taking into account the dominant role played by the church in the dissemination of Byzantine law.

The publications that will be done are the following: Edition of Slavonic translation of Ecolga; Edition of the Armenian translation of the Nomos Stratiotikos Edition of Aristenos commentary on the Synopsis Canonum; Edition of the Nomocanon in 14 titles.
