Public health and pollution in Russia (with special reference to regions in ecological crisis)

Objective

The Russian Federation provides a unique opportunity to study relationships between environmental pollution and public health. The limited number of localised and highly contaminating sources of pollution provide a relatively simple situation compared with the much greater diversity of relatively low level sources of pollution in western Europe.

This project will create a health/environmental database, using health studies already obtained in the United Kingdom and Belgium, and collaborating with Russian researchers who have access to local and regional health/environmental statistics which are currently available.

Following interviews with healthcare professionals in Russia, spatial analysis techniques will be used to evaluate the correlation between specific pollutants and specific health problems. The resulting geographical information system will provide a tool to assist health workers in recognising environmentally associated disorders, as well as providing a foundation of evidence for preventative action.

A geographical information system which will serve as a healthcare tool for healthcare professionals in Russia will be created.
