Democratisation and civil society in the NIS: public attitudes towards constitutional reform, political change and economic liberalisation

Objective

This multi-disciplinary project will analyse the evolution of public opinion towards political factors, as well as political and economic change in Russia and Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

For Russia three areas will be analysed. First, focus will be placed on political parties, their evolution and that of the party system, and the impact of the electoral system upon them. Second, the emergence of interest groups will be dealt with, particularly business associations, their role in the privatisation process and their relationship with the state. Third, various surveys of public opinion towards political and economic change, differentiating according to social strata, will be analysed.

For Georgia the participants will also focus upon three themes: constitutional order and reform in Georgia itself; formation of the party system and of interest groups; and emergence of democratic values during the period since 1988.

The project should enable subsequent comparative work to be carried out on the political systems in other states of the NIS
