Objective
Agpaitic nepheline syenites constitute a group of rare rocks that have been formed by consolidation of silicate melts enriched in alkali metals. The name agpaitic was first given to the rocks of the Ilimaussaq complex near the town of Narsaq in South Greenland. These rocks, and the similar rocks of the Khibina and Lovozero complexes of the Kola Peninsula in Russia, are the most prominent examples of agpaitic rocks and have been the objects of intensive studies. In recent years French and Moroccan mineralogists have initiated the investigation of the agpaitic rocks at Tamazeght in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco.
The research on these complexes of agpaitic rocks in Greenland, Russia and Morocco has now reached a stage when conditions for a joint research project aiming at a compilation and synthesis of the available information is at an optimum. The aim of this joint project is to unite the research effort by means of successive visits to the complexes, beginning in Greenland, where the rocks and minerals are best exposed and most easily available for study. The minerals collected during the site visits will be subsequently examined in a co-ordinated way in Denmark, France and Russia.
Two subprojects will take place, being the detailed investigation of the rinkite group of minerals and the search for the water soluble minerals which Russian colleagues have found in great numbers in the complexes of the Kola Peninsula.
All information obtained will be compiled into a report on the mineralogy of agpaitic rocks. It should be emphasised that the time for producing such a report is at an optimum now when scientists in especially Denmark and Russia with a life-long experience of the study of these minerals are still active in this very specialised field of research.
Following the collection and examination of these rocks and minerals, a reference book will be published which is of use to scientists and those interested in the exploration of the mineral wealth of the agpaitic rocks.
