Objective
In the last decade there has been considerable theoretical and experimental progress in the study of the localization of a finite number of electrons or ions into traps. Such systems are also called artificial atoms. The present project aims to study correlation effects in such artificial atoms where it is planned to investigate several experimental realizable systems. Some of the experimental systems behave classically while others behave quantum mechanically.
The project will involve the study of: two-particle systems like the D center and exciton; classical systems of electrons on liquid helium and ions in traps; and quantum dots where few-electron systems (two, three electrons) as well as very many electrons are planned to be studied.
The study is purely theoretical, with the aim to compare results with available experiments. The project brings together different groups who have complementary knowledge of the theoretical techniques and have different backgrounds in theoretical physics around a common theme.
