Objective
This is a co-operation project between members of the International Mother Tongue Education Network (IMEN) and researchers from the NIS . IMEN is a European network of researchers in the field of mother-tongue/standard language education. One of IMEN's projects is Language Teaching in Multilingual Schools (LTMS) in which the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Great Britain co-operate.
The main aim of this project is to explore the ways in which culturally and nationally determined ideas on mono- and multilingualism become evident in teaching methodologies and teacher behaviour; to extend and enhance the theoretical and practical, body of knowledge that is used by teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers and policy-makers to define, operate and evaluate mother-tongue/standard language education; and to contribute to the process of mutual, cross-national and cross-cultural learning in the field of mother-tongue education.
These aims are mainly achieved by conducting comparative classroom-oriented case studies, including participant observation, ethnographic interviewing and document analysis. The comparative aspect of the endeavour is mainly carried out by mutual visits at the research sites and international workshops in which triangulation and comparative analyses take place.
