A joint Russian / west European expedition to Paramushir Island: reconnaissance mapping of a giant deep sea vent in the Sea of Okhotsk

Objective



This research project will focus on a physical and chemical process which occurs on the deep sea floor and is controlled by the forces of plate tectonics. It has been discovered only in the recent past that sediments at convergent plate margins are tectonically deformed and compacted. This results in tectonic dewatering, such as the effusion of large amounts of hot pore fluids along diffuse and discrete pathways through the sedimentary column. Saturated with methane and other chemical components, these fluids emerge at the sea floor where they may form large vent fields. This reflux of CH4-rich fluids to the ocean-atmosphere system has not been adequately accounted for in models of the global methane cycle. Whilst the total volume is largely unknown, observations on the regional scale suggest that this flux should be considered as a sizeable component in numerical models of the global budget of greenhouse gases.

One of the largest vent sources ever described was discovered by Russian scientists on the western slope of the island of Paramushir in the Sea of Okhotsk. In this area an eruption flare of methane-rich fluids extending up to 500m above the sea floor marks the site of active venting.

In order to evaluate the scale and nature of venting in this area, a joint expedition using a Russian research vessel with scientists from the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research in Den Burg, the Pacific Oceanological Institute in Vladivostok and the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow will be carried out in the summer of 1994. A high resolution survey utilising deep towed side-scan sonar and swath bathymetry systems will be conducted, as well as standard geological and hydrochemical sampling. All information collected on the physical and chemical process of venting, as well as previous data, will be compiled into a geographical information system database that will be maintained in Russia and synchronised between the participating organisations.

This database, as well as a written report, will be made available to the scientific community.
