Objective
This project will establish a network which aims to co-ordinate the research efforts of eighteen laboratories in the study of dynamical systems subjected to constraints. Thirteen laboratories are already collaborating and this project will join their efforts to five further laboratories in the NIS.
The research programme of the network is directed towards: a general study of constrained systems; applications to model systems, in particular the sigma-model, and other examples in which the motion lies on a group manifold; problems related to Yang-Mills theories, including definition of physical states and decoupling of unphysical degrees of freedom; the quantum formulation of general relativity as a dynamical system with constraints; generalisations, alternative treatments and modifications of general relativity; study of BRST symmetry of constrained systems, and of BRST cohomology; application of non-commutative geometry to constrained systems, especially gauge theories and extensions of GR; anomalies and constrained systems; W-algebra and W-gravity; and quantization procedures.
In bringing together the existing network in western Europe together with those from the NIS a powerful grouping will be created with immense potential for productive research in these areas through exchange of information and, where appropriate, through visits and short-term exchanges. It is foreseen that at least one workshop will be held to co-ordinate the project.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
