Molecular alloys of fullerene C60 and organic compounds leading to plastic crystals: study as a function of temperature and pressure

Objective

It has recently been shown that under shear stress at very high pressure (20 GPa) fullerene C60 leads to a material which is at least as hard as a diamond. On the other hand, C60 easily forms solvates with a number of organic compounds. The purpose of this work is to discover whether it can form molecular alloys with compounds which are not fullerenes and to study their behaviour as a function of temperature and pressure up to 40 GPa. Compounds which lead to reorientational solids, the so-called plastic phases, are the best candidates because their globular forms approaches that of the C60 molecule.

The objectives of the research are to determine the melting temperature of C60 by extrapolating liquidus curves derived from binary phase diagrams and to find a new route to very hard materials.
