Objectif
This research project will put together information on corrosion and wear resistant electro-deposits of practical application and in industrial use in the NIS and in western Europe and evaluate possible environmentally safe coatings as alternatives to hard chromium. The influence of the kind and nature of the base material, e.g. steel, copper alloys or light metals, will be investigated.
The NIS laboratories will work on the nickel-tungsten, nickel-phosphorous and manganese systems and study deposition and layer properties. The National Technical University of Athens, Greece, will concentrate on nickel and nickel alloys and variations caused by modifying current. The Institute of Polymer Technology in Loughborough, will study wear and corrosion mechanisms of chromium and alternatives, especially hard anodisation. The Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry, Germany, is to study properties of hard iron for corrosion and wear resistance and undertake comparative testing.
