Verification and evaluation of astronaut training

Objetivo

The overall goal of astronaut training is to qualify crew members for the operation and control of space-vehicle systems and the payload, as well as enabling them to deal adequately with all routine and non-routine operational situations. The development of an adequate training and simulations concept is based on a knowledge of the level at which the trainee commences his training sessions for specific tasks. Thus, verification and evaluation of the training process is a most important tool for training planning, co-ordination and implementation.

Before commencing the training process, adequate criteria for the selection of astronaut candidates have to be defined in order to meet the initial training level. During the training process each step is monitored and, upon completion of a specific level, evaluated in order to plan the content and volume of subsequent training sessions. Finally, when training is complete, the overall result has to be evaluated, together with an assessment of skills and abilities, in order to select qualified astronauts for specific flight opportunities.

This project will result in a concept of methods and procedures for selecting suitable astronaut candidates and assessing the level of training with the aim of facilitating the process of training monitoring, evaluation, planning, co-ordination, implementation and verification.
