Deliverables

Information networks on research technology in irrigation and drainage in the New Independent the Former Soviet Union (NIS) have been set up to increase international awareness of existing FSU research results as well as improving FSU researchers access to information from the rest of the world. The networks are forming an important extension of the existing international IPTRID Network(The International Program for Technology Research in Irrigation and Drainage).arid are promoting more costeffective arid higher quality research as well as encouraging the wider application of research results. The networks that havebeen set up comprise: An IPTRID Country Network in Moscow (Russia), to serve the Russian Federation and to co-ordinate with the rest of the NIS, An IPTRID Country Network in Odessa (Ukraine), to serve the Ukraine. and An IPTRID Regional Network in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) to serve the Central Asia States have been implemented. The FSU participants (3, 4 arid 6) now have both hardware and software to enable them to act as National and Regional IPTRID Networks. E-mail/Internet access is available at all three Networks. Participants 3, 4 and 6 have received training in how to manage the use of the IPTRID databases and now have them installed and working. Participant 6 is maintaining and further building a database relating to the environmental problems of the Aral Sea. All three FSU IPTRID Networks have completed their setting-up activities and the networks are now active. Services provided by the networks have been widely publicised and the networks are building up contacts and members as well as encouraging utilisation. At a more fundamental level they are disseminating the material by FSU scientists in the irrigation and drainage sector, and organising seminar events to encourage better communication between these scientists (both within the FSU States and between the FSU and other countries in the world concerned with irrigation and drainage). The details about the FSU IPTRID Networks and the technical information now available through them, has been disseminated in the form of newsletters, scientific articles. registration forms and questionnaires. The dissemination has been made to other FSU states such as Belarus, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan as well as the countries directly covered by the networks in Russia, Ukraine and Central Asian States. Information collected by the IPTRID networks from local researchers has been included in the IPTRID International Research Project Database. As well as being produced as hard copy, the database is installed on an IPTRID Internet server and can be accessed by any IPTRID member or network.
