Coulomb strong and weak interactions in exotic atoms and molecules

Objective



The aim of this project is to consolidate the NIS-west European collaboration on the theoretical description of mesic atomic and mesic molecular processes in hydrogen isotope mixtures, including processes relevant for muon catalysed fusion (mCF), with particular emphasis on assimilating the resources of the theoretical research in Russia. This is an interdisciplinary field which combines atomic and molecular physics with nuclear and particle physics, and invokes simultaneous treatment of coulombic, weak and nuclear interactions. The results are also important in astrophysics, particle physics and fusion energy research. Progress in this area requires the combination of expertise, excellence, and experimental facilities possible only within a multinational collaboration. The essential and most difficult part of the theoretical treatment of muonic physics is the development of effective methods of solution of the Coulomb three-body problem.

The general aims of the present collaboration are: to describe qualitatively and quantitatively the series of microscopic events induced by muons in mixtures of hydrogen isotopes, in particular processes entering the chain of mCF and leading to fusion reactions in muonic molecules; to provide theoretical assistance in feasibility studies of a mCF-based intense (~ 10l4 n/cm2s) neutron source; to exploit the scientific potential of mCF in the contact areas of astrophysics, particle physics and fusion energy research; and to use the developed theoretical methods for the evaluation of experimental data important for mCF and for investigations of weak interactions.

The project will consist in : the calculation of the structure and properties of muonic molecules; the development of theoretical methods for solving the Coulomb three-body problem, including its bound, resonant and scattering states, with emphasis on characteristics relevant for mCF such as energy levels, life times and conditional particle densities; the calculation of the cross-sections for collisions involving mesic atoms in the ground and excited states; the treatment of the interplay between the nuclear, weak and coulombic forces; and the development of the macroscopic description of muonic processes in the form of kinetic models and codes including excited state muon chemistry and physics of mCF.
