Objective
A possible approach towards high-energy electron-positron linear collider consists of using superconducting linac technology (Tesla project). Many European laboratories are involved in constructing a test facility in Hamburg on the DESY site to overcome the challenging problems of superconducting radio frequency technology and corresponding costs.
Such a collider uses long high-current macropulses which require specific developments. In a first phase a conventional electron injector is being built with a performance 200 times lower than nominal (peak current in micro-pulse). The second phase is regarded as a technical development which will be carried out in the framework of the programme. The Russian laboratories will bring important help according to their past experience in linear colliders, high-voltage electron guns and powerful thermionic cathodes.
Within the frame of the present collaboration, a prototype high voltage (300 - 350 kV) gun will be assembled in the VLEPP group in Protvino. The technology is based on the present VLEPP gun (200-250 kV) but will be extended to higher voltages (300-350 kV).
A Novosibirsk type gridded cathode, with the corresponding trigger electronics will be used to perform the first experimental tests with nanosecond current pulses. In the meantime a design study of how to accommodate a faster triggered cathode with a new corresponding electronic will be performed, to offer new performance possibilities (train of short pulse).
For comparison, beam performances with the compact high voltage column, proposed for the gun project, will be simulated using different computer codes exciting in the collaborating laboratories. These simulations will take account of the initial step but also of the final one in terms of average and peak currents. Later on they will serve to reoptimize the electrode geometry of the accelerating high voltage electrodes.
After assembly the gun will be tested in Protvino with the existing measuring equipment. The lack of a fast, and quite expensive, oscilloscope will limit the precision of the beam measurements, but it is believed that one can still assess most of the gun performances for comparison with simulations (charge, spot size and rough bunch length measurements), and also for comparison with TT1 injector which by that time will have been commissioned at Orsay-Saclay.
