Elaboration of methods, equipment and technology of high-frequency (10-25MHz) ultra-sound control of thin-walled (0.5 - 5mm) welded seams produced by laser, electron-beam and micro-arc welding

Objective

Methods, equipment and technology of high-frequency (10-25MHz) ultra-sound control of thin-walled (0.5 - 5mm) welded joints produced by laser, electron beam and micro-arc welding will be developed. Typical applications may arise, for example, in the aerospace industry.

This project will make it possible: to extend the present application field of ultra-sound control to thin-walled welded joints; to increase sensitivity (by 2-3 times) and resolution (by 2-8 times) of ultra-sound control by means of developing a new type of ultra-sound transducers on the base of low-merit piezoceramic; to reveal both low-density defects (like pores, slots and lack of fusion) and high-density defects(as in tungsten inclusions); to monitor the dynamics and shape of the molten pool during welding processes; to carry out digital treatment of ultra-sound data and recognize different types of defects; and to automate ultra-sound control of welding.
