A new concept of two-axis excitation variable speed generators with associated power electronics for power generation

Objective

Electrical machine-coverter complexes (electrical machines and semiconductor converters) are widely used in different sectors of industry such as power engineering, transport, municipal pump and fan stations. This project uses the results of recent breakthroughs in several branches of machine electronics, power electronics, digital control electronics and control automation to design a new machine-converter-control unit with properties and performance giving significant savings and advantages in industrial processes.

The objectives of this project are: analysis of existing experience in MCC utilisation for generating systems; determination of utilisation areas for MCC such as turbounits with variable speed, hydrosets with variable head and renewable generating systems; generation of MCC classification, requirements and criteria formulation for technical feasibility study; first approach to development of effective methods and software for simulation of generating MCC; preliminary analysis of simulation studies of dual-axis excitation system for stability increasing; and development of general approaches for MCC control system based on conventional and Digital Signal Processors (DSP).
