The quality of life gap between East and West: exploring men's and women's health-related strategies in structural change

Objective

This research network will clarify and explore the structural, political and life-style reasons leading to the rapid deterioration in the health status of the populations in most of the NIS countries. Since the reasons for the deterioration in the health status are multifaceted, the research network is composed of scientists representing various research disciplines: psychology, social psychology, sociology and occupational medicine. The broad definition of health, which encompasses physical, social and psychological well-being, is being applied and further developed by the network.

The participants will conduct focus group interviews on issues relating to unhealthy life styles such as alcohol consumption, smoking, high suicide rate and violence, unemployment and unhealthy working conditions. They will also study the effects of women's double burden and its effects on women's health and family functioning, also the position of men in the rapidly changing society will be analysed.

A quantitative survey will be carried out in two metropolitan cities and in one smaller city in Russia. The survey will concentrate on the quality of life style indications as studied in several western surveys. This will allow comparisons in the quality of life difference between East and West.
