Syntheses of natural glycosides from Panax Ginseng and their analogues; studies on bioactivities of these substances

Objective

In contrast to extracts of the Ginseng root the biological activities of individual Ginseng glycosides have not yet been studied sufficiently. The Panax Ginseng glycosides differ from each other by the type of aglycone and by the type, number and position of the carbohydrate moiety.

In this research project the synthesis of some ginsenosides and of their analogues and comparative studies of their bioactivities with the natural ginsenosides isolated from Panax Ginseng will be carried out. Betulafolienetriol, a tetracyclic dammarane triterpene isolated from birch leaves will be used as a relatively accessible starting material for chemical transformations leading either to ginsenosides, pseudoginsenosides or semisynthetic analogues. Isolation and purification of natural glycosides from Panax Ginseng roots will be carried out in order to investigate their specific activity. Cytotoxicity assays will be performed on several cell lines of marine or human origin.
