Objective
Muon catalysed fusion experiments will be conducted for which the muon beam of the Dubna synchrocyclotron is appropriate, with most of the apparatus being constructed by the Dubna mCF group and Delft helping with electronics and on- and off-line analysis.
The first experiment will measure the absolute neutron time spectrum following dd fusion in solid deuterium in the unexplored range 4-20 K. This determines several important parameters, l1/2, l3/2, lhf, e11, where they are most dependent on temperature and hence theory; obtaining e11 to < 0.1 mev makes it a sensitive test of QED and also of solid deuterium structure.
The second experiment will measure dt fusion in liquid H/D/T. It will examine the mechanisms giving similar rates as fusion in D/T but for much lower tritium concentration. Having detectors of very large acceptance enables the first direct measure to be made of the ma sticking coefficient at liquid densities from the (last fusion neutron - decay electron) timings.
