Objective
Over the last twenty years the combination of cryogenic matrix isolation and spectroscopic techniques has allowed the investigation and characterization of a large number of extremely short-lived chemical intermediates to be undertaken. The aim of this network is to expand current research in organometallic photochemistry of d-block transition metal atoms to the f-block lanthanide elements.
The following investigations will be carried out: the electronic spectrum of the isolated lanthanide metal atoms and small clusters; the electronic and vibrational spectra of novel binary complexes of those metals with small ligands like CO, N2, O2, CO2, C2H4, C2H2 and other unsaturated organic ligands; and the electronic spectra of suitable bimetallic clusters; and the results of photochemical reaction activation on these systems.
Furthermore, these small well-defined systems will give an opportunity to evaluate directly quantum chemical theoretical predictions with experimental data.
The project will permit the continuation of promising research in NIS laboratories, allows young researchers from Moscow, Kharkov and Nizhny Novgorod to participate in high-level research and receive training on state-of-the-art equipment, and facilitates highly desirable comparative experiments in NIS and west European laboratories.
