Objective
The anomalous sensitivity of the liquid crystals (LC) orientation to a light makes them a perspective media for both optical storage and information processing as well as allows to wait for fascinating scientific results. Until recently the photoregulation of LC orientation caused by the direct light ction on a LC bulk results in the change of the orientation of director in the LC volume. At the beginning of 90-th some groups (Inst.Phys. in particular) proposed to control the LC orientation in the bulk through the light-induced changes of the aligning surface.
Owing to the long-distance interaction in a mesophase such control is extremely effective; light-induced surface driven reorientation (LSR-effect) is the most effective method from the known ones. The studies of the LSR-effects are in the initial state now. The present Project will be the first systematic studying of the LSR-effects. The use of the LSR-effects, accompanied with the structural transitions in the LC, for the recording, storage and display of optical information is the main objective of the Project. The development of new photosensitive materials providing the effective control of the liquid crystal alignment parameters will be carried out. The different LSR-effects, structural transitions in LCs and the microscopic mechanisms of an easy axis production will be studied in detail. The theoretical and experimental investigations of the threshold and smooth reorientation of the director caused by the light-induced changes of the anchoring energy will be performed. LSR-effects allow to record, process and store optical information by means of the spatial light-induced modulation of the easy axis direction and anchoring energy strength onto the aligning surfaces. The hologram recording, diffraction and self-diffraction of light in the LC cell based on LSR-effects will be studied. As a result, new sensitive optical recording media will be developed. We will propose devices on the base of the structural transitions caused by LSR-effects.
