Mechanism of Light-Induced Structural Relaxation of Aromatic Compounds

Objective

The scope of the project is to characterize the light-induced structural relaxation processes of flexible aromatic molles and to determine the excited state(s) of the photoactive antiviral naphthalimides which interact(s) with proteins. Two main goals are proposed in this project, using the complementary expertise of the four research groups :

to determine the relationship between light induced intra- and inter- mollar charge transfer processes in aromatic molles and to correlate both the structure of the donor-acceptor systems and the solvent polarity and viscosity characters to the fluorescence emission and to the structural relaxation dynamics of the singlet excited state. This relation exists between charge transfer and structural relaxation processes. The obtained data will be used to construct the theoretical dynamic model of the light-induced structural relaxation process. Nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic cations, aminocoumarins, aminobenzo-(and naphtho-)nitriles, as well as aminonaphthalimides constitute the families of compounds which will be studied. The investigations will be carried out using absorption spectroscopy, steady-state fluorimetry as well as kinetic nanosecond and picosecond laser-induced pulsed fluorimetry in wide temperature and pressure ranges.
The influence of several kinds of electron-withdrawing and electron- donating substituents bound to the skeleton of the naphthalimides belonging to the three isomeric series, will be examined to determine the changes of the properties in donor-acceptor electron-exchange reactions induced by light. Simultaneously, the photoreactivity of the singlet and triplet excited states of these molles towards aminoesters and proteins will be compared.
The results of these investigations will be presented as joint articles in scientific journals. Two meetings will be held, one each year, in order to summarize the obtained results and to coordinate the development of the research program for the coming months.
