Objective
The aim of this project is to find and develop environmentally safe biological control agents for the protection of economically important crop plants and the containment of vector-borne disease.
Specific research objectives are: To identify B.t. strains with enhanced toxicity against traditional and non-traditional target insects, To discover B.t. strains with novel cry-type genes and gene combinations using state of the art PCR technology. New potent microbial pathogens will be isolated and those with a higher LC50 value will be selected. New isolates of microbial pathogens will be typed by PCR.
Novel B.t. strains with a broader host spectrum will be identified by a combination of characterization by PCR and bioassays for evaluating efficacy of these isolates against key pests of medical and agricultural importance. In addition representative field collected isolates of each cry type will be tested by bioassay against the target pests. This will result in the identification of new strains of insecticidal bacteria with enhanced activity against traditional and nontraditional target pests.
In addition, the proposed scientific collaboration will augment innovative research capability in the NIS. Young scientists will be trained in novel microbiological and mollar techniques. Through the exchange of information and know-how the collaborating laboratories in these countries will acquire skills in biological control of insect pests in general, in microbiology and in mollar biology, in particular.
