Phytoplankton and Mixing of Lake Baikal

Objective

The main objective of this project is to study spatial and temporal heterogeneity of phytoplankton populations in Lake Baikal, the world's oldest and deepest lake. In the last twenty years, non- endemic species usually associated with the large rivers have begun to appear in the open water plankton and to compete with the endemic species that are adapted to the unusual environmental conditions that occur in the lake. At present, it is not known whether this is part of a natural cycle or if it indicates a more fundamental change.
This project will investigate a major gap in understanding, which is the interaction between near and offshore waters and how it affects the development of algal populations in different seasons. Patchiness will be investigated from a scale of a few centimetres up to distances of many kilometres. The latter will be aided by the use of satellite data. Lake Baikal is large enough for hydrophysical features to be discernible but small enough that relatively limited amounts of data have to be archived. In the last few years, techniques and equipment have been developed at the Institute of Biophysics in Krasnoyask and the Limnology Institute in Irkutsk to detect both physical and biological characteristics through continuous sampling while research vessels are in progress, so large areas of the lake can be covered efficiently. A database will be constructed which can be used both as a management and research tool by all those working on Lake Baikal.
The results will help in formulating improved management strategies for the lake,to assessing possible risks from anthropogenic influence, understanding lake ecosystem processes and aiding interpretation of the unique sedimentary record.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
