Objective
The project involves innovating with the results of recent breakthroughs in several branches dealing with machine electronics, power electronics, digital control electronics, advanced methods of mathematical modelling of complicated Power Systems and special Generators performance in order to design a new association of machine-converter complexes featuring properties and performances which enable Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTs) operation.
The work is based on the command of a machine with polyphased windings on stator and rotor, able to be equipped with a frequency converter and special control system in order to provide fast control of generator output voltage value and phase in accordance with regime requirements in the Power System.
Technical results of the project are based on dynamic performance simulation of one specially chosen Russian power system for the cases of two-axis excitation generators application as a series or/and parallel compensator (reactive power compensation and fast voltage control).
The use of FACTs equipped by advanced Two-axis excitation variable speed generators may provide decrease of their cost, due to Two-axis excitation Generators with associated small power electronics utilisation instead of completely static devices and may simplify significantly powerful FACTs construction when the required power of controlled devices would be hundreds of MVA, supplying voltage exceeds 35 kV and practical realisation of completely static devices for this purpose becomes difficult.
