Objective
One of the most important problems of materials science is the development of advanced materials that operate reliably at high temperatures, under mechanical loads and in aggressive environments. In the use of materials at high temperatures, it is apparent that in most instances the composite ceramics are the best choice due to their intrinsic high-temperature strength, hardness, wear-and corrosion resistance, especially under long term and high-temperature service conditions. Therefore, further research and development efforts to bring these materials to exploitable status have high priority throughout the industrial world.
The purposes of this project programme are: the choice of structural components of ceramic materials on the base of aluminium nitride as well as study of their chemical and structural compatibility for the development of new high-performance composite ceramics with a high level of long-time exploitation characteristics capable to a working at the temperature range of 1200 -1500°C; the study of structure, phase composition and mechanical properties of ceramic materials developed, correction and elaboration of compositions for the improvement of their high-temperature working features; the investigation of kinetics and mechanism of high-temperature oxidation of new AlN-based composite materials (up to 1600°C) as well as an influence of composition and structure of these ceramics on their corrosion behaviour in oxidizing medium; using the results of complex investigations carried out by different research teams to elaborate the principles of development of gradient composite ceramic materials and coatings having an extremely high level of exploitation characteristics (hardness, bending strength, wear resistance, creep at high temperatures, corrosion resistance, etc.). The optimum technological parameters of AlN-based ceramic materials manufacturing will be defined. Just these parameters must ensure the fine-dispersion homogeneous structure formation, the latter reserving at high temperatures and guaranteeing a high level of ceramics mechanical and corrosion properties, on the whole. As a result of this programme fulfillment the principles of creation of new class of gradient composite materials of "oxide-ceramics and ceramics-ceramics systems which properties can be regulated in dependence on the structure, composition and thickness of surface layers will be formulated.
