Cultural and political consequences of the crisis of gender identity following the collapse of the Soviet system

Objective

The fundamental hypothesis of the project is that the collapse of the Soviet system has had profound implications for the gender identity of both men and women. The impact of the collapse of the system on women has been repeatedly noted, particularly by Western commentators, but its impact on men has been much less remarked on.

Preliminary research indicates that the collapse of the Soviet system has been associated with changes in identity which amount to 'a crisis of masculinity', some consequences of which are increased levels of alcoholism, crime, violence and aggression, and the rise of extreme nationalist and chauvinist ideologies.

The objective of the proposed research is to formulate more precisely the changes in, and challenges to, male and female gender identity presented by the collapse of the Soviet system on the basis of qualitative research, using methods of life history interview and the content analysis of cultural representations, focusing particularly on three groups: 'new Russians', older conservative men, and youth. On this basis a questionnaire survey will be conducted which will seek to establish a relationship between gender stereotypes, personality types and cultural and political values.

The research programme brings together experienced young Russian social scientists, all of whom have received training in qualitative research methods in universities in Britain, Germany and France, some of whom are already on the verge of achieving international reputations for their work.

The results of the research will be presented in the form of conference papers, papers in scientific journals, a final report, and a book. Publication of results is anticipated in English, German and Russian.

The Western participants will ensure that the research is connected to international research networks, with a view to develop a genuine dialogue between East and West in one of the many areas of past mutual misunderstanding.
