Artificial Ionospheric Turbulence and Stimulated Electromagnetic Emissions (SEE)

Objective

The scientific objective of the present proposal is the experimental and theoretical investigation of plasma turbulence formation by the action of a powerful pump wave and the subsequent generation of stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE) by interaction of high and low frequency turbulence, with special emphasis on high frequency phenomena occurring near harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency.

The experiments will be performed at the Sura ionospheric modification facility near Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. The participating teams will bring together their existing equipment at one place in order to fully exploit the available experimental possibilities. The experiments will be organized in the form of four concentrated campaigns, distributed over two years.

The participating teams all have a long standing experience in various aspects of plasma turbulence and SEE work. Their combined skills will assure a competent treatment of the various tasks involved in the project.

The research results will be published in refereed scientific journals devoted to radio physics, geo- and space-plasma physics, and pure plasma physics, and will be presented at major international conferences and special symposia.

The proposed work will not only be important within the framework of iono- spheric modification, but for plasma physics in general and its application to solar and stellar plasma surroundings, and to plasma turbulence with common properties for a number of space objects.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
