The objective of this project is to investigate experimentally and theoretically the non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields in the microwave high-temperature processing of advanced solid materials. Microwave methods of materials processing have been demonstrated to be capable of enhancing process rate, reducing process temperature and producing materials with novel properties. The primary reason for these impressive advantages is the difference in the physical processes arising from direct, non-thermal influence of microwave electromagnetic fields.
The general methodology of project implementation is isolation of the non-thermal effects from possible effects of temperature gradients, and systematic, quantitative characterization of the former in their dependence on microwave intensity and, where applicable, electric field vector direction, while maintaining strictly controlled temperature of the process.
The principal experimental tasks are studies of the influence of a microwave electromagnetic field on densification, grain growth and phase transformation in nanostructured ceramic materials; investigation of solid state diffusion, solid state reactions, and spinodal decomposition of solid solutions under heating by a polarized microwave beam; and intra-pore plasma effects in high temperature microwave processing of materials
The materials and processes that are subjects of investigation under this project are selected so that the experimental results will have immediate application in advanced materials technologies, such as development of high-sensitivity gas sensors and catalytic porous membranes of large specific surface area, sintering of nanostructured oxide ceramic materials, YAG-based laser ceramics and YIG-based magnetooptical devices.
Most experiments that involve microwave heating will be performed on the 24/30 GHz gyrotron systems for microwave processing of materials that have been designed and built by the IAP team. The UB and LU teams will complement that with their 2.45 GHz systems. The IEP and IPMS teams will play an important role in the implementation of the project carrying out the important tasks of pre-process preparation and post-process characterization of materials. The background, expertise and equipment of the partner teams are complementary and their resources are adequate for successful achievement of the project objectives in the multidisciplinary field of microwave processing of materials.
