Objective
This project has the goal to prove that silica aerogel with very good optical quality can be used in different applications in elementary particle physics field
The project covers three aspects:
1) The production of aerogel with uniformity in (n-1) better than 1%, of large dimension, stable in time with respect to its optical quality, and with hydrophobic property.
2) The performance of aerogel application as RICH detector at the hadron collider LHC and in space. At a hadron collider this implies an intrinsic angular resolution of 2 mrad, to be proven in test beams.
The use of aerogel in space and at a collider implies also the measurement of scintillation, to demonstrate that it doesn't spoil the resolution.
3) The feasibility of a beam monitor with aerogel when LHC works with heavy ions beams.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
