Objective
The goal of the project is the development of an ultra fast (sub-nsec), low-cost, position-sensitive detector on the basis of new avalanche micro-pixel photodiodes with high photon detection efficiency for visible and UV light. The detector module consists of the novel avalanche micro-pixel photodiode (AMPD) working in single photon detection mode (Geiger mode). As an example of practical application a combination with a scintillator array will be studied. The AMPD with high gain (up to 10^6) will be produced using a new approach to the design of avalanche photodiodes. This approach is based on a local negative feedback (LNF) effect, which significantly reduces the excess noise factor introduced by the avalanche process. The LNF effect is achieved by forming an electric field with a specific geometry in the multilayer silicon structure, which ensures the localization of the avalanche processes and limits them to the micro regions (micro-pixels) with a diameter of 3 - 30 um depending of the design. The multichannel AMPD modules with the above mentioned parameters have a high potential for commercial applications. They will be the basic element for the construction of large area position-sensitive detectors for positron emission tomography in biology and medical diagnostics. The basic photo detector array will also be a key element for light detection in astronomy, astroparticle- and high-energy physics and radiation monitoring (for example in safety surveillance at airports).
