Objective
The project is aiming at the preparation and study of luminescence and scintillation characteristics of selected wide band-gap dielectric materials based on new, high density, Lutetium-rich complex oxides produced in the form of bulk crystals and thick single crystalline films. The relations among the material performance, occurrence & nature of trapping states and particular production technology will be systematically investigated. Prototypes of 2D-imaging screens with the optimized thin scintillation sensor will be prepared.
The research objectives are as follows:
Growth of the Ce-doped and Lu-rich LuxY(1-x)AlO3, xl0.3 perovskites and (LuxY(1-x))3Al5O12, xl0.8 garnets, in the form of both bulk single crystals (Czochralski method) and thick single crystalline epitaxial films (Liquid Phase Epitaxy growth technique) using the same raw materials.
As a complete novelty, new flux (BaO-based) will be used in the LPE growth as well. Material characterization, in particular:
(i) the structure and chemical composition (purity);
(ii) optical and photoluminescence properties;
(iii) occurrence and role of defects/traps and impurities in the processes of the energy transfer and storage;
(iv) scintillation performance.
Optimization of the scintillation performance of developed materials and comparison of their figure-of-merit with commercially available Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce), YAlO3:Ce (YAP:Ce), Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) and Gd2SiO5:Ce (GSO:Ce) scintillators.
·Preparation of prototype of the 2D-imaging screen with better-than 10 mm space resolution, using the developed optimized scintillators, test of its performance and comparison with the commercially available one based on YAG:Ce.
Scintillation materials will be prepared in the well-established industrial and research laboratories within the project consortium using the raw materials of high purity (5-6N). Complementary characterization techniques based on the optical and time-resolved emission spectroscopes, electron paramagnetic resonance and thermo luminescence techniques will be used. Scintillation performance of prepared materials will be tested by radio luminescence, cathodo luminescence, scintillation decay and light yield measurements.
Expected project output of practical importance is the following:
Thin scintillation detectors with high light yield based on new heavy (Lu-rich) materials.
Quantitative comparison of scintillation parameters with respect to the particular preparation technology and material defects.
Comparison with the commercial scintillators.
·Nature of particular point defects in the developed materials. Their role in the processes of energy transfer and storage.
