Objective
The project "Social Tension in Age Groups: Aspiration - Opportunity Gap" is aimed on the study of distribution of social tension within age groups in four societies: Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia. Social tension is defined here as the ratio of aspirations toward living standards to real material situation to: the higher the ratio, the stronger the tension. High social tension is supposed to be conducive to life dissatisfaction and social grievance in some age groups. The hypothesis is that transformation of economics leads to changes in correlation between social tension and age, typical for stable societies. To test this hypothesis four countries are involved: Poland, Hungary as the cases of more successful reformers and, on the other hand, Ukraine and Georgia as the cases of slow reformers. Comparable survey data are supposed to be collected and analyzed. Ukraine and Georgia are the countries of the primary interest, since social situation is changing there, therefore, two waves of comparative surveys are planned there. Hungary and Poland are used as control cases that will allow assessing the scope of social tension in Ukraine and Poland. In the regions or social groups where social tension will be proven to be a cause of growing life dissatisfaction, special measures in social policy must be taken to improve either economic situation or moral condition.
