Objective
The scope of the project is to verify the techno-economic feasibility and medium/long term viability of a promising 4 steps process for large scale biohydrogen production (from low-quality agro-forestry resources). This is expected to compete with the actual price of industrial hydrogen and can be realised on small or large scale. Its potential integration with petro-chemical complexes will also be explored, as well as large scale applications along the Russian Federation natural gas pipelines network (production of Bio-H2 / BioSynGas) in view of its mixing and safe transportation by pipelines towards the Russian Federation and European markets, where it can be separated again. Important is to note that the known tar problem (contamination, blocking the known gasification processes) is eliminated, because it is resolved in the 2-nd step, before the product comes into the gasifier (3-rd step). The objectives of the project are in more detail: - Identification and characterisation of typical biomass resources and its logistics; - Optimisation of the pellet characteristics (size and chemical composition) in view of cost reduction of processing; - Optimisation of the proposed multi-steps process: o Carbonisation / torrefaction of pellets; o Steam reforming process; o CO shifting In view of minimize the H2 production costs and its purity; - Design, construction, set-up, operation of a small pilot-plant for the production of bio-hydrogen (= 98% purity) from agro-forestry pellets to validate the anticipated results, in particular: 1) H2 yield of ~ 50-60 Kg/t pellets; 2) production cost of H2 ~ 1,800 €/t; 3) low sulphur, low Cl impurity presence; - Preliminary design of a demonstration reactor for biohydrogen production (capacity 3 t/hr day); - Assessment of potentialities, impact and investments needed for a large-scale production of Biohydrogen; - Definition of an action plan for jobs; - Assessment of social-economic (competitiveness), environmental (CO2 credits) impact; - Elaboration of a cooperation strategy (transfer of technologies, establishment of joint ventures, education and training activities) EU and Russian Federation.
