Objective
The ALTEC-KIT action follows the successful completion of the IC-1000 project "ALTEC-Algorithms for Future Technologies". The ALTEC project aimed at the strengthening of the research on IT-algorithms in Europe and at a further development of algorithmic tools and techniques. A more specific goal of this project was the effective exploitation of novel programming techniques and programming support environments, predominantly in the areas of parallel computing, distributed computing and combinatorial optimisation. The emphasis was on parallel computing.
The proposed KIT action will allow to carry on active cooperation and to organise the ALTEC workshops: the ALTEC'97 workshop will be scheduled for May 1997 in Saarbrücken and ALTEC'98 in Prague.
The future ALTEC-KIT cooperation will concentrate on basic research on parallel computing. The research work will focus on:
- research on the interprocessor and intercomputer networks;
- design and analysis of new efficient parallel algorithms and testing of their implementation;
- study of the computational power of different models of parallel computers;
- investigations on the complexity of specific problems at hand, in particular trade-offs among the number of processors and time.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
