Tools for Process Improvements Based on Corporate Knowledge Management

Objective

The objective of PICK is to develop two innovative methods and tools for effective management of corporate knowledge needed to support main process improvement (PI) steps, specifically for manufacturing processes. The methods and tools will be tested within the industrial environments of three large automotive and aerospace companies under real conditions. PICK will solve several fundamental technical problems, the most challenging being the one related to the development of an innovative system for unique knowledge management which can be used for different PI related tasks, both in planning and execution phase. PICK will also contribute to standardisation of interfaces needed for capturing knowledge from different systems.

Objectives:
The technological objective of the PICK project is to develop two innovative methods and tools for the effective management of corporate knowledge needed to support the main process improvement (PI) steps, specifically for manufacturing processes.

The business objectives are to achieve direct benefits for the end-users based on the application of PICK methods and tools in terms of: reduction of effort/costs for PI tasks, planning/execution of changes in processes (especially in run-up phases of the re-designed process), reduction of risks when changes in processes/products are done, e.g. reduction of potential wastes and re-work, down times of machines and workers etc. The application of PICK results will improve the possibilities to involve all employees in PI tasks, to easier transfer/share knowledge between manufacturing areas/lines, or between different plants.

For the vendor and R&D partners, a business objective will be to provide prerequisites to develop a new generation of IST tools for knowledge management which will lead to an increase in turn-over of at least 7 Mio EURO in the first three years after the commercialisation phase.

Work description:
The following technical goals are envisaged:
Development of a knowledge-based method and tool (PICK-DIAG) for the capturing and utilisation of knowledge for identification of problem causes, which will support identification of at least 60-90% of (potential) causes of problems and reduce the average time and effort for these activities by 25-40%.
Development of a method and tool for the management of knowledge for action planning towards reduction of problem causes and process improvement (PICK-ACTION) which will guarantee that for at least 60-80% of the identified problem causes appropriate elimination measures can be defined and a reduction of time/effort for these planning activities by at least 25-30% is achievable. It is expected that this will reduce problems by more than 20%. These methods and tools will be tested in real industrial environments within the three large automotive and aerospace companies, the end-users in the consortium, thus addressing several business cases such as sharing of knowledge gathered within different product life cycle sectors, knowledge sharing about similar products and processes, knowledge sharing across plants.

In addition, PICK will contribute to the standardisation of interfaces needed for capturing knowledge from heterogeneous systems, as well as the dissemination of the project results.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
