New Imaging Head for Digital Offset Printing Presses

Objective

NIMED will develop a new imaging head that will increase the speed, decrease cost and improve the ease of maintenance of Karat Digital Press's new digital offset press, the 74 Karat. The 74 Karat is designed to deliver high quality colour prints with a short job preparation time. The press includes a special imaging head that exposes the printing plates on press. However, the current imaging head has drawbacks of speed, cost, and ease of maintenance. The new head will overcome these and enhance the 74 Karat's competitiveness and speed up the market penetration of digital offset presses. Project objectives include the development of novel opto-electronic components suited to the unique application requirements of imaging on-press, and their integration into an innovative imaging head. Development includes a high power array of laser diodes; LCD reflective screen for spatial modulation of high power radiation; supporting microelectronics and optics; and data transfer manipulation capability. Other applications include PCB manufacturing and CTP.
