Objective
This proposal is based on previous activities and achievements obtained in the Europractice initiative concerning the Competence Centre for Biomedical Microdevices, termed MEDICS CC. A biomedical database structure for microdevices was established and a first contact network was built. We propose to continue these efforts providing focused information services and technology access for biomedical devices (INTECS) through MEDICS. Information services include user-friendly access to the extended biomedical database containing information on European biomedical and microsystem providers, products, services and co-operation partners. Further services comprise person to person assistance regarding the identification of co-operation partners and technology providers, the availability of components and guidance on product related solutions.
Objectives:
It is the objective of INTECS to apply the know-how on microdevices for biomedical applications gained in MEDICS to the benefit of European device manufacturers, scientists and clinicians.
Different measures are foreseen to:
1) enhance mutual awareness on existing technology and market opportunities on the supplier and user side,
2) further establish a European platform for information access, network of contacts and expertise between users and suppliers,
3) support partner search and access to existing European services and competence on the different aspects involved in the value chain of biomedical product development,
4) provide first step support in feasibility assessment, concept evaluation and design,
5) disseminate standard design microelectrode system as a key component to stimulate application oriented R&D,
6) to become financially independent of EU support.
Work description:
The workpackage focuses on the following topics:
- Awareness and dissemination. An update of the MEDICS webpage will be elaborated that describes the activities performed and services offered within the framework of the project INTECS. Two industry-oriented workshops are offered on the topic of biocompatible packaging and interconnects. A newsletter will be distributed via Internet.
- Proactive contacts. Selected potential customers will be proactively contacted and visited directly to present the service of MEDICS and INTECS.
- Data acquisition for biomedical database, starting from the existing database structure and its public demo-version focusing on neuroprosthetics, publicly available basic data (address of the institution, topic of activity and product-/service category) on pertinent selected organisations (including service providers and users) in Europe will be systematically acquired for the database. Public access to biomedical database is offered to EU organisations. A search engine will be used.
- Support on feasibility assessment, design, partner search and technology access will be offered on the basis of MEDICS' existing European contact network. Services are offered to providers, device manufacturers and clinics.
- The promotion and dissemination of microelectrode- microprobe- and telemetry systems to the scientific and clinical community will be carried out.
- Existing European networks like Europractice (EP 3) and NEXUS will be used to enhance INTECS activities.
