Satellite-Based Remote Multi-Project Reporting and Controlling in Construction Industry

Objective

The project is a trial aiming for remote multi-project reporting and control in the construction industry. The problem of construction sites reporting progress to headquarters and the re-scheduling of a project with implications on other projects is difficult when the information flow is slow. Due to missing communications infrastructure at a construction site, satellite based links will be used for communication. In the headquarters, an integrated system of ERP (enterprise resource planning), PM (project management) and others is implemented. Remote sites will be able to browse and update this information using normal WWW browsers and special software clients. The consortium consists of one end-user CONSULGAL and a supplier team providing the necessary hard- and software and satellite components for the trial.

The global objectives of the project are:
1. to enable European construction enterprises including SMEs to increase their competitiveness in the global marketplace by deploying innovative satellite based information browsing and updating (reporting) facilities, which enhance multi-project scheduling, management and control;
2. to deploy satellite based links using standard protocols to enable information sharing between world wide distributed teams, specifically for construction projects, allowing European enterprises including SMEs to overcome constraints in working methods and organization imposed by distance and time.

To fulfil these two objectives, an integrated hard- and software system is specified, implemented, trialed and evaluated based on the construction enterprise end-user requirements already known but continually analysed and refined at the participating end-user sites.

The project aims to enable the efficient sharing of information between team members at any time and place. This will be achieved through an inter-linking of heterogeneous workplaces based on standards (Internet protocols, IFC (Industry Foundation Classes), XML (eXtended Mark-up Language)) using satellite links as carrier. The information base is set-up by integrating already existing applications for the domains ERP, PM, and HAPC (horizontal actions planning and control). The integration of these software systems will also be achieved by employing the standards (IFC, XML).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
