The European Service for Magnetic based Microsystems Design and Fabrication (Europractice III)

Objectif

MAGFAB is a European service which aim is to facilitate the access, at low cost and low risk, to magnetoresistance based microsystems technologies and to shorten product development cycles. This proposal aims at providing access and solutions for the design, prototyping through Multi-Project Wafers runs, and production of magnetoresistive (MR) based microsystems. In fact the partners of this proposal have developed several techniques, methodologies, processes and solutions for the development of magnetic based microsystems. Two complementary process technologies will be offered by MAGFAB: AMR (Anisotropic Magnetoresistance) and GMR (Giant Magnetoresistance).

Objectives:
The manufacturing facilities active within Europractice III provide access to micromachining process technologies (both bulk and surface) and enable the realization of microelectromechanical functions and systems by the release of the mechanical structure. This proposal aims at providing access and solutions for the design, prototyping through multiproject wafer runs and production of magnetoresistive (MR) based microsystems. In fact the partners of this proposal have developed several techniques, methodologies, process and solutions for the development of magnetic based microsystems. Two complementary process technologies will be offered by MAGFAB: AMR (Anisotropic Magnetoresistance) and GMR (Giant Magnetoresistance).

Work description:
MAGFAB is a European service which aims at facilitating the access, at low cost and low risk, to magnetoresistance based microsystem technologies and to shorten product development cycles. These goals will be achieved by offering the customers
- A global service from design to production of microcomponents for MR based Microsystems
- AMR and GMR multiproject wafer service for prototyping and low volume production on mature qualified and stable processes. This MPW service will provide the cheapest offer currently available: 3000 euros for 15 samples of 1 cm chip of the designed MR device.
- Standardized design rules and industrial CAD tools for the MPW process.
- Access to existing MST sales and MST dedicated IC cells.
- Highly qualified design houses for proof-of-concept studies and turn-key designs.

The work is divided in 9 workpackages:
WP0 Detailed description of services;
WP1 MAGFAB dissemination and marketing;
WP2 MAGFAB MPW service development;
WP3 MAGFAB foundry service running and update;
WP4 MAGFAB design and engineering platform and library;
WP5 MAGFAB proactive customer acquisition;
WP6 Customer support/packaging;
WP7 Coordination/clustering;
WP8 Management and performance criteria monitoring;
WP9 Exploitation and technology implementation plan.

Milestones:
- Release of MR design and engineering platform - 6 MPW runs organized for the 2 years: 3 AMR runs (months 6, 12 and 18), 3 GMR runs (months 9, 15, 21)
- Up to 52 designs on the MPW service during the 2 years of the program (6 designs on the first AMR and GMR runs, 10 designs or more on the following runs).
- 2 new custom processes industrialised on customer requirement at the end of the 2 years through the custom process service.
