Novel Techniques for Describing Shapes in Computer Graphics and Image Processing

Objective

Image informatics is a key technology for realising the information society. It comprises both image synthesis (computer graphics) and image analysis (image processing). The common way to describe images and shapes is by means of pixels (for image analysis) and triangles (for image synthesis). These descriptions have their inherent shortcomings. Due to technological developments (Moore's Law) the geometrical models are becoming so large that these shortcomings become inadmissible. Therefore we aim at a significant enhancement of traditional shape description methods based on a semantically higher-level geometric description language. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Mathematical conceptions of homotopy and Morse theory might be useful to overcome the barriers of existing shape description techniques. Preliminary investigations carried out by e.g. T. Kunii in Japan show promising results. We will bring together a number of competent European researchers, we will consult Kunii and get early results (working demonstrators) to assure industrial interest. On basis of the results obtained in this twelve month project, it will be decided whether these new and novel techniques merit a full scale project.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
