Patterns To Adopt Knowledge Based Solutions To Software Management Problems

Objective

Organisations tend to re-invent the wheel when they come to management issues. They do so, because previous experiences seem very different from the current problem, so much so that the previous experience does not appear to be valid in the problem solving process. PATTERNS aims to create an internetworked architecture of Knowledge Centres and distributed end-users that will support their transformation in knowledge driven and learning organisations. PATTERNS will provide a dynamically adaptive architecture that will allow organisations to increase their knowledge capacity, capitalise on that knowledge into business processes and manage the distributed knowledge embedded in Management Practices.

Objectives:
PATTERNS provides an internetworked software application that allow users to obtain a rapid solution to a context based problem. This solution will be provided according to the knowledge available locally at each Knowledge Centres and to the one available in the network.

It is based on:
1. Modelling the KC domains of management practices, to determine common characteristics, the rules to be applied and the action to be taken.
2.Defining a learning and dynamically adaptive architecture that allows users to explore analogies between a current working situation and past experiences, and to use them in solving a new problem by recognising its similarity with a specific known problem.
3- Creating an internetworked structure supported by intelligent agents, to spread the learning process across different organisations and by considering end-user

Work description:
WP0 Project Management. Guarantee: the successful completion of the project within agreed time, cost and quality, compliance with the EC standard and procedures for the project management and tracking, an effective communication channel among the consortium partners.
WP1 Baseline: Establish a common baseline for the project activities to be accomplished during its lifetime, ensuring that all consortium partners have a clear understanding and agree with respect to project goals, planning, success criteria and results exploitation policy.
WP2 Domain Modelling. Formalise the knowledge available at the Knowledge Centres (KCs) and model it in terms of: domain characteristics, rules and actions to be taken.
WP3 Tools Development. Develop the three software components of Patterns solution. This software solution is based on integration of three different technologies: Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), Intelligent Agents (IA) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) interface.
WP4 Integration and Acceptance. Integrate the tools developed into the final system; install the integrated solution in each KC; test the installed solution operation and get final acceptance.
WP5 Operation and Maintenance. Operate at users sites PATTERNS integrated solution, correct defects found as a result of PATTERNS solution operation and identify and describe potential enhancements.
WP6 Marketing and Exploitation. Analyse the market for the PATTERNS solution, define the exploitation plan and disseminate the project results in different Forums.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
