Objective
CHERI Best Practice Action will promote a broader adoption of proven IST technologies to significantly improve the process of acquisition, management and delivery of high quality images and other rich media in the Art and Culture domain. It will allow their transfer from sources (museums and/or media archives) throughout their scalable integration into publishers' corporate digital systems. In particular, CHERI will help memory institutions to better digitise and use their relevant heritage in digital formats, and publishing and media companies to effectively access and use these digital collections, with significant advantages in terms of product quality and service productivity.
Objectives:
Among the major innovations in the project are the application of advanced security and certification features, the integrated management of the value chain by resorting to process engineering and workflow management tools, the application of quality management and colour certification features throughout the value chain, the application of advanced 3D user interfaces for the remote browsing and selection of media, the attention to rich media (not just images but other rich media assets such as animations, 3D models, video, hypermedia, etc.), the transfer of the widespread Application Service Provider (ASP) model into the management of cultural assets, the integration of advanced media management and content management tools with sophisticated information retrieval capabilities.
Work description:
The project will adapt and integrate already developed advanced solutions based on proven technology into an open platform that can be used by content providers and publishers (and, more generally, by suppliers and consumers of digital media) to license copyrighted material. To this end, the project will:
-showcase systems and techniques to support museum activities for high quality image acquisition with very high resolution and colour accuracy;
-offer a comprehensive outsourcing service for museums to transfer into to Cultural Heritage sector the successful model of the Internet Application Service Provider;
-provide identified customers a complete image selection service protecting high definition images pre-integrated inside publications' mock-ups;
-provide customers with a friendly interface based on 3D navigational metaphors;
-establish a Management and Clearance of Rights service (MMCR);
-integrate a modern system for electronic payments, through a Trusted Third Party;
-use management services enabling full visibility of the ongoing transactions of copyrighted digital information;
-allow advanced pre-press software solutions with use of colour certification parameters.
Milestones:
Major milestone in this project are:
M1 System specification
M2 Business Planning;
M3 Deployment of the CHERI solutions on user sites and operational centres;
M4 Assessment of pilot performance;
M5 Packaging of CHERI solutions and guidelines;
M6 Exploiting CHERI services according to best practice models.
