Objective
Biomechanics is a diverse, multidisciplinary area, which makes it difficult to ensure that its strategic development is coherent. The proposed project is designed to bring together the whole European biomechanics community -encompassing research, industrial, medical and educational aspects- to determine the priorities for its future development, to ensure that the community is fully aware of the possibilities offered by recent initiatives, and to create Working Groups in the strands that are identified as being most critical for the future development of the area.
Objectives:
The primary objective of the project is to take advantage of a beneficial coincidence of events to create one (or, more probably, several) Working Groups in biomechanics, particularly in computational biomechanics. The current "Decade of the Bone & Joint" seeks to concentrate international resources to provide a new impetus to relevant work; meanwhile, the EC-funded VAKHUM project promises to provide forms of data to which biomechanics professionals have never previously had access. The BioNet project will build on these to give a strategic direction to future biomechanics work in Europe. Work description:
The main focus of the project is a central Event, "Biomechanics in the Decade of the Bone & Joint", which will involve the entire European biomechanics community. This has the support of all of the relevant professional bodies (assurances of support have already been given -evidence of this is provided). Costs to participants will be kept low in order to ensure high participation rates. Special rates will be given to enable broad access by research students and biomechanics professionals from Central & Eastern Europe. The Event will provide a forum to review the current state of the art, and will allow poster presentations of all current European biomechanics research projects. Speakers of international repute will introduce papers on subject areas identified as holding the greatest promise for future research, and there will be sessions in which participants can raise contentious issues -these can subsequently be addressed further in the later panel sessions. Participants will be able to meet researchers with expertise parallel with, or complementary to, their own, with a view to forming either a Working Group in a particular area or a research consortium that requires their particular specialism. There will be trade stands to enable industrial companies and publishers to present their latest products and to provide an opportunity for dissemination to existing EC-funded projects in biomechanics. The project will provide active post-Event support, in collaboration with the professional bodies, to enable coherent Working Groups to emerge. The environment of support created by the project should also enable Research Networks and research consortia to arise rapidly and naturally. By all of these actions, European biomechanics will make greatly accelerated progress and achieve greater coherence, thus enhancing its position on the world stage.
Milestones:
The major milestone of the project will be a successful completion of the Event. As a result of the Event and post-Event support, we expect the European biomechanics community to create several Working Groups. These Groups will liaise with the relevant professional societies and organisations such the Committee of the Decade of the Bone & Joint, etc., to give a strong strategic direction for future biomechanics work in Europe.
