The objective of this best practice action is to use flat displays first time by Skyvision in screen based information systems by developing a digital MPEG2 based video distribution system, which enables real-time and high quality transfer of computer generated pictures to flat displays.
The new information system consists of MPEG2 Encoder unit beside PC and MPEG2 Decoder units beside flat displays. Standard, inexpensive and thin twisted pair cables can be employed with MPEG2.
It will make possible to transfer video signal in the new information system in a digital form at all steps:
PC -> encoder unit ->line connection -> decoder unit -> flat display.
The new digital display connector (DVI) specially designed for flat panels will be utilised in this project.
The paypack period of this project is under 3 years and Profitability Index is over 300%.

Business Objectives: This Best Practice Action with potential patent will have a great strategic impact on Skyvision's position in information system market and it will essentially improve the competitive edge of Skyvision. The goal after project is to become a technology and market leader as a component supplier for information systems. Payback period of the project is under 3 years and Profitability Index (PI) is over 300%.
This project includes the design of MPEG2 encoder and decoder units, which enables the optimal connection of flat displays to information system. A new practice is to use MPEG2 encoder and decoder circuits. The new DVI connection will be used in this project. There is no consortium in this project. Fujitsu Mikroelektronik is a training provider and supplies decoder and encoder circuits.
The work consists of the following workpackages:
W1: Specification, includes the functional and technical specification for the system.
W2: Training includes training course organised by Fujitsu Mikroelektronik and exercises with the evaluation board
W3: Design workpackage consists of the schematics, PCB, FPGA and C-code for encoder and decoder unit
W4: Testing includes the testing phase of the prototype boards
W5: Dissemination includes generating the dissemination material and organising the seminars
W6: Management & Measurement and evaluation of results
The major milestones and expected results are:
Month 1: Functional Specification written and reviewed
Month 3: Technical Specification written and reviewed, the report of MPEG2 course and exercises written
Month 6: Encoder and Decoder unit schematics is made
Month13: Fully working prototype
Month14: The dissemination material is generated and the seminars have been hold
