Objective
CONTESSA will develop a content transformation engine that will provide transcoding and integration of content into device-tailored user interfaces through alternative communication channels. The system will track and manage alternative access devices (PCs, WAP phones, ISDN phones, PDAs, voice enabled devices, Digital TV set-tops) while providing a personalized environment for content deployment based on a standardized XML framework that will allow the content to be extracted, converted and integrated, without the need and cost of content re-authoring. The content industry will be able to extend their brand into a multi-device, multi-network environment. CONTESSA aims to contribute to the economic development of the Community by providing cost efficient mediation services enabling universal access to distributed content and transaction management systems through alternative emerging access devices.
Objectives:
CONTESSA will bring enormous benefits to the Content Industry by allowing content to be automatically and cost effectively adapted to any requesting device (PC, smart phones, mobile phones, PDAs, DTV set-top-boxes) seamlessly over any network infrastructure. The main objectives of CONTESSA are:
- Develop a content transformation engine that will provide translation and integration of content into device-tailored user interfaces through alternative communication channels. The system will track and manage alternative access devices while providing a personalized environment for content deployment based on a standardized XML framework that will allow the content to be extracted, converted and integrated, without the creator's interference
- Validate the system through a number of interactive transactional services to be delivered over multiple types of networks, to devices using different access protocols enabling e-Commerce and e-Business widespread application.
Work description:
From the technical point of view, CONTESSA will be a component based SW platform supporting standards such as Java for development, JDBC and XML schemata for interfacing and exchanging of information with databases, XML, XSLT, SVG, WML, HTML for content formatting, DVB-MHP for digital receivers (set-top-box), SSL for transaction security, and many others. The Transcoding service will be applied directly on raw data through a two-stage transformation process that includes the sequence: raw data to XML to target device format. The project deployment will progressively emphasize on multimedia content delivery and e-business transactions through a series of devices such as DTV Set top boxes, WAP-supporting mobile phones, desktops encompassing Web browsers, and ISDN card phones with HTTP-like request/reply abilities. The CONTESSA architecture will be modular so as to allow for the effortless integration, customisation and utilization of new components. The verification of CONTESSA results will be achieved through three (3) large-scale international pilot projects (Greece, Denmark and Belgium). In the first prototype, the technology providers themselves will test the system using laboratory simulation models. All corrective actions will be elaborated and embedded to the final prototype that will be installed at the pilot sites, where individuals and participating users will be invited to use the extended system functionality. The Incremental development process (2 prototypes)through a continuous user feedback and validation process will drive the implementation of the final system very close to fully commercialised products and services. Dissemination activities of the project results are already planned to take place during the project lifetime. The consortium will appoint a dissemination manager with the relevant expertise to coordinate the development of promotional activities and materials.
Milestones:
Milestone 1 [month 6]: User Requirements Definition & Mock-up demo
Milestone 2 [month 9]: Functional specification and design
Milestone 3 [month 14]: Delivery of initial CONTESSA prototype
Milestone 4 [month 18]: Delivery of the final CONTESSA prototype
Milestone 5 [month 24]: Final System Validation & Technology Implementation Plan.
