E-Learning solution for Automotive SMEs

Objective

The project aims at demonstrating the added value for SMEs of an innovative e-Learning portal targeted to supply companies operating in the automotive sector. ELSA is based on the platform named Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) developed in the ESPRIT TQM-Online Project, and focuses on the provision of online training courses, tutoring and support from experts, communication and course management tools and possibility for the SMEs to set up their own customised e-Learning sites, selecting courses from the catalogue, tracking and reporting functions, learning modalities and communication functions (self-paced, collaborative, real-time), and graphic templates. To this end, the ELSA project intends to fine-tune the VLE to the needs of automotive supply SMEs; to test it for evaluating its training effectiveness and the sustainability of the business model; to gather feedback useful to refine and finalise the e-Learning portal for market exploitation. OBJECTIVES
The project aims at demonstrating the added value for SMEs of an innovative e-Learning portal targeted to supply companies operating in the automotive sector. ELSA is based on the multilingual intranet-based platform named Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) developed in the ESPRIT TQM-Online Project, and offers training courses, course management functions and a full suite of value-added services, supporting collaborative training sessions, online tutor guidance and knowledge sharing. Therefore the objectives of the ELSA project are:
- to extensively test the ELSA portal with European SMEs in real industrial contexts
- to fine-tune the VLE platform for the Internet, creating an e-Learning training solution tailored to meet automotive SMEs needs;
- to finalise the e-Learning solution for market exploitation;
- to implement an effective dissemination strategy to ensure the widest cascading of the project results.The key challenge is to encourage SMEs to make use of the ELSA solutions, measure the impact of its introduction and to refine the service offered.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
1.Three SMEs based in three different European countries participate in the consortium. Their user requirements will be analysed in the first place. Then they will be combined with the requirements originating from other SME members of national associations. The VLE developed in the ESPRIT Project TQM Online will be tailored to meet these specific requirements. In addition to the training applications Quality Management Systems and Capable Process other training courses indicated by the SMEs will be included in the system where appropriate. The platform will allow SMEs to create their own e-Learning sites with customised features.2. Test of the usability, efficiency and effectiveness of the ELSA portal in training pilot sessions: a detailed Evaluation Plan will be produced as guidelines and reference for the training pilot sessions attended by employees of the automotive supply SMEs involved in the project. The Evaluation Plan will include a detailed data collection plan for gathering the results of the training. Emphasis will be on the measurement of usability, efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed e-learning solution, and on the economic viability of the underlying business model.3. Analysis, evaluation and dissemination of the findings/feedbacks from the training sessions: the pilot sessions will be closely monitored and the empirical results analysed and compared to the target objectives outlined in the Evaluation Plan, in order to produce a Survey of Trial's Results which will provide the final assessment of the e-Learning training solution's effectiveness and its impact on the SMEs involved in the trial. This Survey will be widely disseminated throughout Europe to demonstrate the results of Web-based training in automotive SMEs. European and national associations of SMEs will be directly involved in this stage of the project. In parallel, the feedback collected from the trials will be used to refine and finalise the ELSA portal.4. The e-Learning offer will be detailed for market exploitation in a business plan, which will describe the pricing and partners' alliance strategies.
